Project Overview

Saadiyat Marina Mosques is a concept for three community mosques conceived around the spirit of place, creating places of worship that are deeply connected to the cultural, environmental, and social character of their setting.

Located within Saadiyat Marina, at the heart of Abu Dhabi’s evolving cultural landscape and connected to the wider Saadiyat Cultural District, the mosques are envisioned as more than functional religious facilities. Each is intended to create a meaningful relationship between worship, community, architecture, and place.

Together, the three mosques accommodate congregations ranging from 1,924 to 2,520 worshippers while sharing a broader vision centered on identity, belonging, and environmental responsibility.

Goals & Objectives

The central objective is to create mosques that belong to their location.

Rather than approaching the buildings as isolated architectural objects, the concept responds to the site’s character, local culture, environment, history, and traditions. The intention is to create places where architecture contributes to a stronger sense of connection between worshippers and their surroundings.

The project also aims to establish a holistic experience in which the architecture, spatial organization, environmental response, and spiritual function work together as one meaningful whole.

Sustainability is embedded within this vision, with all three mosques designed to meet Abu Dhabi’s 3-Pearl Estidama requirements.

Challenges

A central design challenge is translating the abstract idea of the “spirit of place” into a clear architectural identity.

The mosques need to respond to the distinctive cultural setting of Saadiyat while fulfilling the practical requirements of large congregational facilities. Each building must accommodate significant numbers of worshippers without allowing scale or operational requirements to overpower the sense of spirituality and connection envisioned by the concept.

The three mosques also differ in size and capacity, requiring the broader design philosophy to remain consistent while responding appropriately to the requirements of each individual building.

Design Solutions

Bayaty Architects developed the concept around the principle that a mosque should not simply occupy a site, but belong to it.

The design vision begins with the character of Saadiyat itself. Local culture, environmental conditions, traditions, history, and the wider cultural significance of the island become inputs into the architectural concept, helping each mosque establish an authentic relationship with its surroundings.

Rather than treating individual elements independently, the project takes a holistic approach. Form, space, spiritual function, environmental performance, and sense of place are intended to reinforce one another, creating an experience greater than the sum of its individual components.

This shared philosophy provides continuity across the three mosques while allowing differences in scale. Mosque 4 accommodates 2,484 worshippers, Mosque 5 accommodates 2,520, and Mosque 6 accommodates 1,924, enabling each facility to respond to its particular community requirement without losing the overall conceptual identity.

The 3-Pearl Estidama target further connects architecture with environmental responsibility, ensuring that sustainability forms part of the project’s design thinking rather than being treated as a separate technical requirement.

Outcome

Currently at concept stage, Saadiyat Marina Mosques establishes a vision for contemporary places of worship rooted in spirituality, cultural identity, sustainability, and connection to place.

Rather than creating interchangeable mosque buildings, the concept seeks to give each place of worship an authentic relationship with Saadiyat Marina and its wider cultural setting. At the same time, the three mosques are united by a common philosophy that prioritizes meaningful experience over architecture as an isolated object.

The result is a concept in which the mosque becomes part of the identity of its surroundings, creating a spiritual and community landmark shaped not only by function, but by the distinctive character of the place it serves.
